Well it’s about time someone in the US laid in on the line and called US online gambling policy (UIGEA) for what it is – a threat to world economic stability and a fight the Yanks are bound to lose!

Two brave US legislators have sent letters imploring the US Attorney General Michael Mukasey to desist in operations against the EU-based online gaming (and by implication online bingo games operators) to avoid a trade spat that could be very damaging to the US.

Thank you Rep. Robert Wexler and Rep. Steve Cohen for showing the kind of sense some of us in the online bingo industry were coming to think no longer existed in the US.  Maybe now US authorities will see the senselessness of enforcing the UIGEA legislation that was introduced in late 2006 and caused so much damage to otherwise legitimate businesses.

This is not to say that there are many in the US that have not fought UIGEA from day one – Barney Franks and Ron Paul come to mind – and this is not to say that UK bingo online and other European online bingo operators are dependant on the US market:-  Clearly they are not and have bounced back admirably from the loss of the US market due to UIGEA.

What this is to say is that there is a growing majority of people who see the idiocy of US online gaming policy and this give us all hope that UIGEA may become a relic of times we would all rather forget – I’d bet on that!

News out of the US shows that the influential land-gaming lobby, the American Gaming Association (AGA), is continuing to spend money trying to influence US politicians that the faltering land casino industry needs their protection.

I have said this often, and will say it again:  Land gaming operations are on the way out; online gaming (most of all online bingo) is the way ahead.

The AGA reportedly spent $400,000 in its lobby efforts – the online bingo games industry spent much more than that providing fantastic prizes for people who like to play bingo online.

Maybe it’s just me, but I think I know who has the better policy when it comes to looking after the punters.

For more evidence that all is not well in the land gambling/casino world, news that Boyd Gaming Corp., a Las Vegas casino company, has halted construction on its $4.5 billion Echelon resort development is yet more fodder for concern that normally recession-proof Las Vegas is also feeling the effects of the US economic downturn.

Meanwhile, online gaming companies, especially those like 888.com who have invested in online bingo games sites, have continued to post excellent results.  This is despite the hit the online gaming and online bingo industry took when it suffered the loss of the US market thanks to the implementation of UIGEA in late 2006.

The Swedish online bingo games market is one of the most exciting in Europe, yet the Swedish government still maintains a monopoly that limits online gaming operations to one state-run company.

However, news that Betsson, a private online gaming and gambling company, has posted excellent 2nd quarter results shows that where there is a will there is a way.  Betsson should be congratulated on their stellar earnings, especially when you realize that the official monopoly is currently posting less than stellar earnings – it speaks volumes, doesn’t it?

My hope is that the Swedish market will eventually allow UK online bingo operators to offer their services to Swedish customers who want to have a choice where they play online bingo.

I’m not ashamed to admit that much of knowledge on developments concerning online bingo and the various online bingo games software developers comes courtesy of the excellent people at Clarion Gaming, particularly their iGamingNews.com publication and their very informative Internet Gambling Report publication.

Big changes are afoot at Clarion Gaming and I’m sure that these changes will ensure the top-notch services built up by outgoing US branch CEO Sue Schneider.  Schneider has come to the end of a the two year term she agreed to when  River City Group was bought by Clarion Events in July 2006.

A notable change is the move of Chris Krafcik into a new role as Editor of IGamingNews.com.  I will be particularly interested to see what enhancements Krafcik brings to what is already one of the (if not the) best sources of bingo online information on the Internet.

In these doom and gloom economic times its very heartening to see that online bingo is producing one of the rare bright spots on the earnings front for at least one major online gaming company.

888.com, the owner of the popular Bingo Street-rated 888ladies.com online bingo hall, has released results showing an exceptional 33% sales jump, largely thanks to contributions made by its online bingo games operation.

In my opinion this is only a hint of things to come and it does prove that when you play bingo online you’re playing a winning game where so many others are loosing.

The use of mobile phones in spreading the accessibility to online bingo is being touted as a major factor in the popular online game’s future growth, according to the UK’s Bingo Association.

Stephan Baldwin (not the actor) of the Bingo Association says mobile technology will help expand the online bingo industry, adding: “Mobile bingo may just open a new market because it provides a new channel for people accessing bingo.”

This is something you would never see in your average online bingo hall.  A New Jersey casino customer/player was recently ejected by the casino he was playing at on account of his poor personal hygiene.

The man in question had been playing for 17 hours straight and was apparently becoming a bit ripe for those around him.  He was finally asked to leave and now he’s seeking an apology from the casino for embarrassing him in front of the other customers.

His request for a free room to freshen up was also apparently refused. The man said to casino officials: “There’s no question I stink. I’m not denying it. I do have an odor. I’ve been playing for 17 hours.”

The moral of the story here folks is that you will never have to face this kind of thing if you stick with playing your bingo online.  That’s definitely one of the joys of online bingo as I see it.
