Mecca Bingo, or rather their parent company Rank, are over the moon about the outcome of their dispute in reclaiming extra taxes from the government. The court ruled in favour of the bingo operator, ruling that the club was owed £62 million in overpaid VAT.
As much as this might seem a major coup for Rank in particular, this could have negative consequences further on down the line for the rest of the UK bingo industry.
Most major bingo operators have been struggling for a while in the gloomy economy of late, holding down weighty debts with banks, hoping to pay the loans off with VAT reclaim funds currently held by the Treasury.
Some industry experts now suggest that banks could move for direct repayment of the VAT in order to reduce the overall debt of the bingo industry, which together with the recent changes in taxation for bingo halls, could mean a clampdown on further investment for bingo hall operators in the UK. So the bingo industry could actually find itself in a worse position than it was pre-budget.
With a new 22% tax for land-based bingo operators (just 15% tax rate for online bingo sites), the future doesn’t look too rosy. We urge you to join the campaigns and save your local bingo halls and clubs, a vital part of local communities all around the UK, and write to your local MP’s to ask for a reduction to 15% tax rate in line with the rest of the gaming industry in the UK.

Today’s entry has to be about a heart-warming story today we reported earlier in the Bingo News section, which brings an awesomely happy ending to a sad story in the world of bingo.
We earlier reported on the life-long ban from Mecca Bingo clubs all over the UK for 76 year old pensioner Rose Clemson, after she’d organised a couple of day trips to rival bingo clubs in her area.
14 months after the ban, Rose was still suffering from depression and decreased mobility as a result of the ban from her local bingo club just across the road from her. For more than 50 years Rose had played bingo several times a week with her friends, and it was a vital part of her everyday routine and social life.
Since the ban she sank in to a deep depression and lost her social lifeline, all her friends going to bingo and she could only stay at home.
Ladbrokes Bingo heard about the lifelong banishment of Rose recently and decided to do something about it, offering her a position as Bingo Ambassador for their online bingo site, LadbrokesBingo.com!
Unbelievable stuff eh? Well there’s more. Ladbrokes also forked out for a special mobility scooter for Rose to spread the word about online bingo among her friends. She’ll also be advising the company on bingo games and promotions, drawing on her more than 50 years of experience in the field as a player – what a perfect partnership!
Needless to say Rose was absolutely ‘gobsmacked’ to hear the news and was moved to tears. It’s definitely not every day that you hear about new job opportunities for 76 year old pensioners!
Best of luck to Rose and our hats off to Ladbrokes Bingo for making good and bringing happiness back into a lifelong bingo enthusiast’s life.

Sacha Baron Cohen is certainly getting more than his fair share of publicity right now. After his hilarious descent from the heavens to plonk his jockstrapped bum upside down in Eminem’s face (yes it was staged of course) at the MTV awards, reports are now coming out of a bingo player suing the whacky Cohen for an apparent battering that left her in a wheelchair.
Well, my online bingo buddies, I really don’t know what to say. I know that Cohen can be outrageous at times, but I really don’t think he’d go so far as to attack defenceless old ladies, especially if they’re playing bingo games in a bingo hall! Definitely wrong place to pick to attach a bingo player, he’d be outnumbered in seconds by righteous bingo fans brandishing bingo balls and sharpened daubers on the attack.
According to the bingo player in question, it’s definitely not a joke though. She’d organised a celebrity to call the bingo ball numbers at a charity bingo game, and Sacha turned up in his Bruno character, dressed in revealing clothing looking decidedly camp.
She tried to take the microphone from him when his language became ‘vulgar and offensive’ and apparently Cohen pushed her to the ground, whereupon the camera crew rushed up and attacked her (?) while continuing to film.
She claims she retired to a back room at the bingo hall where she became unconscious and fell onto a concrete slab hitting her head. Ended up in hospital and has been confined to a wheelchair ever since – sounds pretty serious.
Apparently our beloved Sacha Baron Cohen has a string of lawsuits trailing behind him in his quest for ever increasing outrageousness. But at least we know that Eminem won’t be suing, as that was a setup.
